Free Cross-Border Assessment Tool
Identify the residence, treaty and reporting questions that may require professional review before moving between the United States and Italy.
Preliminary result
Cross-border review recommended
This is a screening result, not a determination of tax residence or professional advice.
A treaty tie-breaker may resolve residence for certain treaty purposes when both countries treat an individual as resident, but U.S. citizenship, Green Card status, saving-clause rules and information reporting can continue to matter.
Your answers remain in your browser and are not transmitted to ITA International Tax & Advisor. Refreshing or leaving the page clears the assessment.
What the checker examines
Three systems that must be read together.
Days are important, but cross-border residence rarely turns on a single number. The tool identifies where a more detailed analysis may be needed.
Domestic residence
Italian and U.S. domestic rules use different connecting factors. Citizenship and immigration status can also affect the U.S. result.
Treaty residence
When both systems claim residence, the U.S.–Italy treaty may require analysis of permanent home, vital interests, habitual abode and nationality.
Reporting exposure
Residence is only one issue. Accounts, companies, trusts, property and investments can create separate filing obligations.
